Designing Cases & Products

At Wireless Xplosion, one of my roles as a UX/UI Designer involved designing and developing phone cases that not only met functional requirements but also appealed to users’ aesthetic preferences.

We initially focused on printing designs exclusively on solid colour phone cases when I initially began working with Caseco on their designs.
The owner's thought process behind this approach was that he believed that it would allow him to standout in the market against his competitors who often printed on black cases like BURGA or clear cases such as Casetify. However, printing on coloured cases meant that a lot of the designs had to be reconfigured to compliment the colour of the chosen case which didn't always work out & limited us in the designs itself.

The main coloured cases were; pink, teal, purple, orange, and black-- however, this also varied depending on the make and model of phone with some having a slightly different shade of the current colours.

Other problems I faced were:
  • designs had been the same for a few years.
  • outdated prints
  • no longer matched the company brand and style
So I began to create some simple designs that aligned with the company's brand better and followed the trends that we were seeing in the market (SEPT 2023).
This led to some increase in sales for Caseco's design cases but the project was iceboxed due to other projects that I was overseeing.

In the late winter of 2024, I pitched the importance of newness for the brand and having the designs printed on clear cases really allowed us to appeal to a wider audience as it allowed us to create beautiful designs as opposed to creating patterns just to match the colour of the cases.

A lot of our vendors really loved the new prints so I spent the next few weeks creating design cases. Some designs were created for specific retailers and others were made based off of what we had seen trending recently.
Another reason Caseco didn't print designs on clear cases was also because they had issues previously, with the designs chipping off occasionally so a lot of trial and error to test out the design margins for the print as well as primer & sealant , to how thick the ink would be once all the layers for the printing had completed. So during this period where we tested out different designs to see how our retailers would like it, we also utilized the opportunity to see which recipe would create the best results for the print, in terms of colour vibrancy, how well the print adhered to the case, etc.
